PHONES!

When the phone rings

I try my best not to answer

It is like that 2 am

long lost family visitor

with bad news

I look at the screen

and try to decipher

the importance

of the number

calling at that hour

And I let it ring

For anything

That is not ole talk

For anyone

who is argumentative

For people who don't know

 how to laugh

and some who are just plain fast

For foreign numbers

that refuse to text first

For long

monologue calls

That I can't cut

And these money request calls

that  I love to duck

I let it ring

For weekly favours

that try to steal my sleep

For those who never repay

Yet call me cheap

Maybe I just can't find the words

to reply

to what I fear they would say,

after hi

So I let it ring

RIDING

Heading down the main road at full speed

My arms stretched out wide on each side

My legs, moving faster than the wind

my presence making sounds

To accompany

The steady rhythm of the pedals

I'm balancing

Showing off

In this no arm bike ride journey

Moving my body

hailing everybody

As I speed by

I'm balancing

Taking the corners like a pro

Leaning gently to the right

Straightening up on the straight part

Feeling great

The wind cannot stop this heart

I'm balancing

Bending where the road bends

Surviving impending

accidents

Like that time I flipped over the handle

at full speed

Like that time around the blind corner

when Janella painted the street with blood

Oh God,

what a tragedy!

The bike was too small for her

The speed was more than the bike could handle

It was just a bloody fun hustle

Just like this 2021

This blind corner

These bends

These manoeuvers

This road that has taken friends,

and family and

friends of  family

This blinding sun

These false hopes

These vaccine jokes

Sweat

the sand flies

Teary eyes

Closed caskets

and this one chain

That keeps me moving...

I'm balancing

again
